Eleventh Meditation on Prayer: In Prayer We Intercede

In prayer we intercede for those in need of God’s intervention, caring for others more than ourselves—knowing the blessing of giving rather than receiving (Acts 20:35). The brokenness and need of others become our brokenness and need. We pray asking God to open the floodgates of heaven and pour out an abundant blessing upon their lives (Mal 3:10).

In our weakness in prayer, not knowing how to properly pray, the Holy Spirit intercedes through us as he groans within us. He prays through us according to the will of God (Rom 8:26-27).

Prayer is speaking to our loving Heavenly Father, the One who freely gives us every good gift. We intercede for others, knowing he will not give a serpent for a fish or a scorpion for an egg. Rather, as we wait in his presence he will give us the greatest gift of all gifts, his Holy Spirit (Luke 1:11-13).

We pray that God will pour out his Spirit, making all his children prophets (Num 11:29; Acts 2:17).  We pray that he will empower many to be witnesses to the Lord’s resurrection in the power of the Spirit (Acts 1:8). We pray that signs will follow every proclamation of the gospel, convicting of sin and bringing to repentance. 

In prayer we pray for those who are being persecuted because of righteousness (Mat 5:10-12). We ask for protection, deliverance, and for an empowerment for steadfast witness through loving their enemies (Mat 5:43-44).
