Fifth Meditation on Prayer: In Prayer We Find Satisfaction

In prayer we eat bread from heaven finding our soul’s joy and satisfaction (John 6:32-33).  Through prayer we drink living water, experiencing everlasting life (John 4:10).  Prayer is waiting in God’s presence, learning to know his assuring voice to better follow our Good Shepherd (John 10:47; see Ps 23).

Prayer detaches us from worldly pursuits as our hearts are freed from idols (1 John 2:15; 5:21).  We find our satisfaction in our intimacy with him, knowing that “in him … are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col 1:3).

We are satisfied as we experience in his presence freedom in Christ. Through grace–filled prayer our hearts no longer desire the broken cisterns of this world that cannot hold water. We rather immerse ourselves in “the spring of living water” (Jer 2:13). We draw near to God, and he draws near to us and in his closeness we are more than satisfied (James 4:8).
